Danny as been writing about air purifiers for 10+ years. He is a major fan of home technology, which makes him the perfect person to test and evaluate products for HouseFresh

Here at HouseFresh, we are constantly researching the latest and greatest technology to help keep your home clean, tidy, and healthy. For us, cleanliness isn’t simply defined by doing the dishes or making the bed (although these certainly make a good start) but embodies a fresh and pure environment throughout the home. Even down to the air we breathe.

As our homes are vulnerable to a range of airborne pollutants, it makes sense to take action. An air purifier proves to be the best form of defense, whether you’re concerned about allergies, odors, or bacteria and viruses that can affect our daily lives. To help you find the right purifier for your needs, we’re bringing you the best of the best air purifiers on the market as of 2021. These are the units that we found to perform the best for a variety of different situations that could effect the most amount of people.

An air purifier works by utilizing powerful fans to draw in swathes of air, its HEPA filter then traps any pollutants, capable of capturing at least 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns. If the purifier also has an activated charcoal filter, odors and gases (VOCs) will also be removed, leaving clean and fresh air to be redistributed around your home.

When considering an air purifier, be sure to pay close attention to:

  • The Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) – this measures how well a purifier removes common pollutants such as dust, pollen, and smoke.
  • The size of the space you wish to use the air purifier in. Each machine is able to purify the air in a given sized room, so ensure you’ve taken measurements.
  • The type of filtration you require.

Drawing from our extensive research over the last year, our team of experts have cherry-picked a selection of top purifiers that can combat a range of needs, whether pollution, mold, or odors, and everything in between. Our top 16 purifiers cover various needs, budgets, and room size suitability, so there’s something for everyone.

When compiling our recommendations, we utilize Consumer Reports and analyze product reviews through Fakespot to ensure each purifier ranks highly and comes recommended by the genuine users who use them day in, day out.

1. Levoit Core 300

The Levoit Core 300 is a go-to air purifier option for small to medium-sized rooms like bedrooms and home offices. It will clean the air by filtering out fibers, pet fur, bacteria, mold, pollen, and plenty more at a quickened speed thanks to strong VortexAir 3.0 technology. This allows it to filter the air around five times per hour. While it does so, the QuietKEAP technology works to keep the noise level low with the option to set it in Sleep Mode for even quieter operation.

If you want more control over when the air purifier operates, then you can adjust the timer settings. This can run for two, four, six, or eight hours. With these options, it only runs when you want so you can have it going whenever you aren’t in the house. Also, for nighttime use when people are trying to sleep, you can turn the display off for those who can’t sleep with any lights on.

With its HEPASmart Technology, it can filter out up to 99.97% of airborne particles that are as small as 0.3 microns. This filtration technology features a pre-filter to capture large pollutants, an H13 True HEPA filter for the smaller irritants, and an activated carbon filter. The carbon filter has 10 times the amount typically found in air purifiers, allowing it to absorb and trap stronger odors from cooking, pets, and smoking.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: HEPA
  • Room Size Suitability: 215 sq. ft
  • Filter Life: 6 to 8 months
  • Noise Level: 20 to 50 decibels
  • Best For: Bedroom | allergies/asthma

What we love

  • Able to customize the unit with different filters to suit your needs
  • Features 360-degree air circulation so you can set it up at any angle
  • Compact and sleek design for space-saving use
  • Has a responsive and easy-to-use touch display

We don't like this as much

  • Might pull in less air if set up low on the floor
  • The unit would benefit from having an auto mode

2. Alen 45i

In our hands on review of the Alen 45i we got to see why so many people are happy to spend nearly $400 for a gadget to clean the air.

If your a light sleeper, be sure to give this unit a look as it goes down to 23dBa and utilizes pink noise that has been shown to help people sleep faster and sounder.

The highlights is the Austin based Alen’s lifetime guarantee. This is not something you see in the wider tech industry, never mind in the world of air purifiers.

We recently became in possession of a 10 year old Alen A350  that was the unit to beat back in 2010 and we were pleased to see that you could still buy replacement HEPA filters.

If you can stomach the initial outlay – you will be very pleased with the Alen 45i for small-medium sized rooms and the 75i for the larger spaces.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: True HEPA H13  (medical grade) and activated carbon is available in some filters plus an ionizer that can be on or off.
  • Room Size Suitability: 800 sq. ft
  • Filter Life: 1 year
  • Noise Level: 23 dBa | Highest Speed 49 dBa
  • Best For: Smoke with optional “Heavy Smoke” filter the “Pure” filter is more suited for those with allergies as is 100% H13 HEPA.

What we love

  • Pink noise a unique idea but makes sense as most people will want to leave an air purifier on at night
  • Good space - 800 sq ft
  • Ability to choose the filter that works for your needs
  • Forever guarantee is not something that is common with any household gadgets

We don't like this as much

  • It's not cheap so out of budget for some
  • Filters cost quite a bit without the subscription

3. Blueair Blue Pure 411 Auto

The Blueair Blue Pure 411 is a compact air purifier designed for smaller or medium rooms, able to be placed out of the way without hindering its effectiveness. The unit works well at handling numerous airborne particles large and small. With its fabric pre-filter, it can work on the larger issues to help extend the life of the remainder filters. Its HEPASilent filter works well at removing up to 99.97% of airborne pollutants using electrostatic technology.

As airborne pollutants like pollen, dust, and other allergens are being managed, the carbon layer goes to work on trapping light household odors so that the air isn’t just feeling better, but smelling better too. There is a simple LED light that helps you stay aware of the current air quality as it will go through three different colors.

If the particle sensor detects anything out of place, then it will automatically speed up the fan mode as long as the unit is running in its auto mode. When the pollution is under control, then the unit will automatically slow the fan speed back down. It is an ideal way to save on energy since it will never work harder than it needs to so that your air remains clean and comfortable.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: HEPA
  • Room Size Suitability: 190 sq. ft
  • Filter Life: 6 months
  • Noise Level: 18 to 48 decibels
  • Best For: Bedroom/office

What we love

  • Simple to use thanks to its one-button control design
  • Hidden cord compartment keeps everything looking tidy and neat
  • The unit is lightweight so it's easy to carry around
  • Multiple color options to choose from for the fabric pre-filter

We don't like this as much

  • The touch control could be more responsive to a light touch rather than a harder press
  • We wish there was a setting to lock the control panel to prevent tampering or accidental pressing

4. Medify MA-40

The Medify MA-40 is a fantastic mid-sized unit to handle medium and some larger areas from bedrooms to living rooms. It has a comfortable CADR of 380, allowing it to have high efficiency in the stated room size, clearing out the air in about 30 minutes. This is designed with an H13 HEPA filter that can remove up to 99.9% of airborne particles. These particles can be as small as 0.1 microns, and they include common household pollutants such as pet dander, smoke, and dust.

The pre-filter will work on handling larger particles like hair, while the activated carbon filter eliminates typical odors that can come from pets, smoke, or cooking. You can choose from three different fan speeds too so that it runs as quickly as you need it to. If you want quieter operation, then set it up in sleep mode. This will also dim the unit’s control panel lights for more comfort.

This air purifier is straightforward to use too. The touchscreen display is large enough to easily read and manage as it has everything you need right within reach. There’s a filter indicator and timer that can be adjusted for up to eight hours. Since it’s right on top of the unit, the filter indicator is easily accessible without you having to bend over to check any settings.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: HEPA H13
  • Room Size Suitability: 800 sq. ft
  • Filter Life: 6 months
  • Noise Level: 30 to 65 decibels
  • Best For: Allergies

What we love

  • Features a handle on the back to aid with portability
  • Creates cleaner and fresher smelling air
  • Features airflow from the front and the back
  • There's a display lock to make it safer for children

We don't like this as much

  • We’d like to see wheels on this unit to further help with portability
  • We wish the unit also featured remote control operation for ease-of-use

5. Alen 75i

Another unit from the Alen family, this time for larger rooms, is the BreatheSmart 75i. Fully equipped with a medical-grade H13 HEPA to eliminate those pesky allergens down to 0.1 microns as well as a fully stocked activated carbon filter to deal with odors. You can tailor the filter to suit your needs with 3 different styles to choose from.

The greatest feature of this unit is its built-in air quality sensors. These detect the slightest change in air quality and automatically adjust the fan speed to counteract the change. On the touchscreen display is a large round LED which changes color to indicate how clean your air is. Purple is bad, blue is good.

Other settings on the control panel are fan speed, timer, ionizer, filter life indicator, and lock to make sure non of your settings can be changed by curious kids or pets.

With a clean air delivery rate of 347, the 75i sits firmly in the high-end market for larger rooms, and for good reason.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: HEPA
  • Room Size Suitability: 1300 sq. ft
  • Filter Life: 12 months
  • Noise Level: 25 to 49 decibels
  • Best For: Pet dander/mold/mildew/cooking odor

What we love

  • Works fast to tackle various household odors
  • Provides a soothing pink noise for night time
  • Display buttons completely disappear when unit is turned off
  • Changing the filter could not be simpler

We don't like this as much

  • The low fan speed could be a little more powerful
  • We wish the LED lights could be optionally dimmed

6. IQAir GC MultiGas

The IQAir GC MultiGas is a medical-grade air purifier that features powerful filtration to handle gaseous pollutants. Its HyperHEPA filter is designed to trap ultrafine particles, and these can be as small as 0.003 microns. The size is smaller than that of a typical virus, and the filter manages to capture up to 99.5% of these airborne pollutants. Ultrafine particles can readily penetrate lung tissue, and since this unit works hard to capture them, the air purifier can be helpful to handle issues like asthma.

This unit performs well too thanks to the triple-seal technology that locks in the filter and ensures there will be no air leakage to hinder its efficiency. Also, thanks to the new edition and maintenance-free fan, it has a high CFM delivery rate of 300. This pairs well with the EvenFlow Diffuser that offers 320-degree air delivery that keeps the distribution even.

It is also designed to function well in larger-sized rooms. This makes the unit a good choice for use in larger living rooms, basements, or for open floor plans to handle multiple rooms at a time. With how well it can handle gaseous pollutants, the unit is also great for use in rooms where odors, household, or chemical-based ones, are present, such as if you are painting in the room or smoking.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: HyperHEPA
  • Room Size Suitability: 1125 sq. ft
  • Filter Life: 2 years
  • Noise Level: 25 to 59 decibels
  • Best For: Smoke/asthma

What we love

  • Thanks to its airflow design, there's no noisy air outlet to disturb you
  • Includes a simple remote for distance use
  • Can easily set up timers so that it runs at a specific time
  • Offers a noticeable difference in surface dust reduction in a brief amount of time

We don't like this as much

  • The display controls could benefit from a backlight for low-light reading
  • We’d like to see built-in wheels to aid with portability

7. RabbitAir MinusA2

The RabbitAir MinusA2 is a super sleek air purifier ideal for those who need something that can be tucked out of the way, which can be helpful for those with young children. You can stand this unit up, and with its low-profile and thin design, it can stay out of the way. Alternatively, you can also mount this air purifier on the wall, keeping it firmly out of reach from young kids or just as a space-saving option. There’s an air intake on the top and one on the bottom front for good circulation.

Operating the unit is streamlined too thanks to the easy-to-understand control panel running down the side of the unit. It’s a smart unit too as it features a light sensor that will automatically transition it into sleep mode when it’s used in a dark room. There are five fan speeds to cycle through, giving you the tools to operate this air purifier exactly how you need it to.

For how it functions, the unit has six stages of air purification. It starts with the washable and permanent pre-filter to capture large particles, and it moves from there to the medium filter that works on capturing particles larger than 1 micron. Next is the BioGS HEPA filter for particles as small as 0.3 microns, and then you get to the customized filter. This filter can be for pet allergies, germ defense, odor remover, or toxin absorber. There is a charcoal filter for odors and a negative ion generator to freshen the air.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: HEPA
  • Room Size Suitability: 815 sq. ft
  • Filter Life: 2 years

Designed to accommodate large spaces, the Coway Airmega 400 is a smart Energy Star certified air purifier that can cycle the air in a room at least twice per hour. It has a built-in pollution sensor that detects air quality in real-time, its colored LED ring changing to indicate the status.

If set in smart mode, the purifier will also automatically adjust the fan speed depending on the current air quality detected. To further support its eco-friendly nature, the purifier will turn the fan off to save on energy once it detects that the air quality has been of a high standard for at least 10 minutes. There are five fan modes in all to set: smart, sleep, low, medium, and high.

The Airmega 400 has a 3-stage filtration system which starts with a pre-filter to handle those larger particles like dust and dander. From there, the MAX2 filter comes into play. This includes a green True HEPA filter that tackles viruses, fine dust, mold, and more. The third stage is the activated carbon filter that reduces household odors like cooking smells and cigarette fumes as well as VOCs. Maintaining these filters is simple enough as it is quick and easy to remove the filters for cleaning or replacing them.

Features:

  • We wish the LED lights could be completely turned off

9. Dyson Pure Hot+Cool HP04

The Dyson Pure Hot+Cool HP04 is a multi-functional unit for those of you that need more than just an air purifier. Featuring HEPA filtration to clean the air, this sealed HEPA filter manages to capture allergens as small as 0.3 microns, taking up to 99.97% of various pollutants such as mold spores, pollen, allergies, and dust. The unit also features a space heater, making it perfect for use in colder weather. There is even a fan option if you need to, alternatively, cool down.

To help you maintain cleaner, fresher air, the unit is also designed to automatically sense any air pollution. It can report on its findings through the LCD display, highlighting traces of allergens, ultrafine particles, VOCs, and nitrogen dioxide. For additional monitoring, you can set up the Dyson Link. This way, you can control your unit from your phone as well as check on real-time air quality.

If you wish, you can even use Alexa to control it via your voice. Turn on the auto mode on the unit also so that it can continue to adjust itself based on its findings. 10. Coway AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier

The Coway Mighty works well in medium-sized rooms such as bedrooms, and thanks to its unobtrusive design, you can set this up in various places without it getting in the way or taking up much room. Available in black or white, this stylish unit features real-time air quality monitoring. There is a colored LED light on the panel that will alternate between three colors, indicating whether the air is good, moderate, or unhealthy.

This detection works alongside the automatic fan speed control. Depending on the quality it detects, the fan can pick up or slow down. In eco mode, the fan will shut off completely after it continually detects clean air for 30 minutes. Once pollution is discovered, however, it will immediately kick back on. If you don’t want to rely on that, then you can use the timer function to set up one, four, or eight hours.

With how well it cleans the air, the unit features 4-stage filtration. This includes the pre-filter for larger particles, the deodorization filter to handle fumes and odors, a True HEPA filter for smaller particles like fine dust and pollen, and the vital ionizer. This ionizer that you can turn on or off works to generate an electrochemical reaction that then further lowers airborne particles.

The Honeywell HPA300 is a worthwhile unit to help allergy and asthma sufferers breathe easier. With its HEPA filter, it can capture microscopic airborne pollutants such as pet dander, smoke, dust, and pollen. It can eliminate up to 99.97% of these particles and works well across all types of rooms, such as bedrooms and bathrooms. In its stated room size, it can cycle the air about 4.8 times per hour.

Operating this air purifier is simple thanks to the touch controls on the top. You can set up the timer function, allowing the unit to run for a set amount of time such as two, four, or eight hours. The touch panel also allows you to control the dimmer, lowering it or turning it off completely. It’ll also help you set and stay aware of the cleaning level. There are four cleaning modes in all, including a turbo mode for when it’s time to get serious.

Even if you opt to set this unit up so it runs for a lengthy amount of time, the air purifier is Energy Star rated. As such, you can freely run this for a good deal of time, all day in fact, if needed and it won’t drastically raise energy costs.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: HEPA
  • Room Size Suitability: 465 sq. ft

With the HyperHEPA filtration system, the unit focuses on capturing ultrafine particles in the air. These ultrafine particles can range from 0.003 microns to 1.00 microns. This makes the unit effective at making the air healthier, a useful tool if anyone in the house is ill or vulnerable.

Besides addressing viruses and bacteria, the air purifier can handle the usual airborne pollutants that can bother allergies or trigger asthma symptoms. Such particles include pollen, dust, pet dander, and mold spores. With its triple-seal technology, the filter is well-protected in an airtight environment. There is a high-end fan built into it as well for more efficiency in a shorter amount of time.

You’ll always be aware when it’s time to maintain the unit thanks to the color-coded filter indicator on the unit. It cycles the air every 13 minutes or so, working hard to remove harmful airborne pollutants with a CADR of 350 for smoke, dust, and pollen. As such, it’s a great unit for continuous operation. Thanks to its 360-degree air intake, it can handle multiple angles at once for even more efficiency.

The air purifier also boasts reliable purification properties. It features a washable fabric pre-filter that works as its first line of defense, handling those larger issues like hair. Next is its HEPASilent technology. It utilizes electrostatic filtration to better capture and eliminate up to 99.97% of airborne pollutants. This includes airborne germs, pollen, pet dander, and dust.

Within this air purifier is also an activated carbon layer. This layer focuses purely on capturing common household odors such as cooking smells and pet odors. It manages to do all this cleaning in low noise levels that many may consider to be more like white noise, making it efficient to run at night while sleeping or even for use inside nurseries or a child’s bedroom.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: HEPA
  • Room Size Suitability: 540 sq. ft

This air purifier is designed for small to medium-sized rooms, allowing you to easily set it up in any room that your pet frequents or sleeps in. For instance, this works well in a bedroom, a living room, kitchen, and more. The quality of the air is always monitored too, and the unit will show you any changes based on the simple LED light on the front that cycles through three different colors.

These triple smart sensors not only detect particles in the air but also work on detecting odors. When used in auto mode, the unit will then pick up the fan speed to address any problem it senses. Another nice automatic feature is that it will detect if the room is darkened and send itself into sleep mode for energy-efficient operation instead.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: HEPA
  • Room Size Suitability: 300 sq. ft
  • Filter Life: 1 year
  • Noise Level: 26 to 40 decibels

15. Medify MA-112

The Medify MA-112 is a unit designed for open floor planned homes or simply large rooms. It has a CADR of 950 for maximum efficiency in the stated room size, making this a useful air purifier not just for rooms in your home, but also for office settings, schools, etc. With four fan speeds to choose from, you can have it running on the lower levels to produce less noise so that no one is disturbed.

The unit features dual H13 HEPA filtration. This works to remove up to 99.9% of airborne pollutants such as pet dander, dust, pollen, and other allergens as small as 0.1 microns. Before anything can get to that though, the unit features a pre-filter for larger particles. Also, this has an activated carbon layer that works to absorb odors.

Everything about the unit is easy to use too so that you can manage it quickly. It has a seamless touch panel that lets you turn on the optional ionizer, set the timer, control the fan speed, and even keep a watch on the filter replacement indicator. With this air purifier being Energy Star certified, you can run it for extended periods of time, even keeping it on all day without worry.

16. Winix 5500-2

The Winix 5500-2 stands firm against airborne particles and odors, ensuring the air in your home is of the healthiest quality. It does this thanks to the PlasmaWave Technology that works at reducing many airborne viruses and bacteria. Besides that, it features a True HEPA filter to capture up to 99.97% of airborne particles including microbes, pet dander, dust, dust mites, and even smoke. The carbon filter works to quickly remove odors, while the pre-filter captures those larger airborne pollutants.

This works well in medium-sized rooms like the living room/family room, bedrooms, etc. With its comfortable CADR, it can handle cleaning the air in these rooms in little time, creating a noticeable difference in surface dust, odors, and more without having to run all day for you to detect any change in the air quality.

So that you don’t always have to manually adjust the settings, the unit is built with a smart sensor and an auto mode. The sensor will detect the current air quality in real-time, and from there, the auto mode function will adjust the fan speed accordingly. It will tell you the change via the colored LED light that cycles through three colors. There is also a sleep mode so that you don’t have to be bothered at night with loud noises.

Features:

  • Purifier Technology: HEPA
  • Room Size Suitability: 360 sq. ft

  • Sleep mode speed doesn't move the air quite as much

FAQs About Air Purifiers

Is it okay to leave an air purifier on all night?

If you are out of the house, it is acceptable to leave an air purifier running all night or all day. In the case of those that are powered by HEPA filtration, they do not produce anything harmful to send out to the air. If the air in your home is especially polluted with allergens or other issues like smoke (in the case of wildfires), then leaving the purifier running 24/7 is nothing short of helpful.

Also, the machines are built for continuous operation. So, they are not prone to overheating when you leave them running without a break.

Do air purifiers really help with allergies?

One of the most common reasons people use air purifiers is to help with allergies, especially during allergy season. This is achieved thanks to filters inside air purifiers that are designed to pull in and capture small particles with many HEPA filters capable of handling those tinier than a micron. This makes it easy for them to suck in various allergens commonly found in the home.

These allergens can include pollen, pet dander, dust, and dust mites. By capturing and eliminating these airborne particles, the purifier will send out nothing but clean, allergen-free air.

What is CADR?

When shopping around for an air purifier, a good way to ensure you will receive an effective one for your needs is to check the Clean Air Delivery Rate, otherwise referred to as the CADR. This will help you understand how the air purifier will perform in terms of how quickly and efficiently it works to clean the air in a given room size.

An air purifier’s CADR is decided by measuring the volume of clean air produced when handling dust, smoke, and pollen. The higher the rating, the more efficient the unit will be at removing these contaminants. The highest is not always best, consider the size of your room first as the units with high CADR are usually built for large rooms and/or the whole house.

Which Air Purifier is Best for You?

Choosing the best air purifier for your home needs isn’t as simple as picking the first one you find. These machines come in various designs and have different uses. Some are made more compact, intended to handle smaller rooms best. Others are designed to clean multiple rooms at once. Deciding among that comes down to not just the size of the room you need to be filtered, but also the amount of space you have available to set up a purifier.

Purifiers can also come with various technical features. Some purifiers are straightforward in their operation, while others boast numerous smart features such as timers or sleep modes. The degree of filtration is another important factor to consider when deciding on the right air purifier since some have multiple filters to handle the likes of airborne toxins and heavy odors, while others effectively capture airborne allergens and smoke.
